Working with SMCT
Here is what some members of our team have to say about working with the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT). As you’ll discover, SMCT really does aim to be a great place to work, where people can be the best they can be.

Personal Development Programme – Gary, Horticulture Operations Manager, Springvale Botanical Cemetery
“I was fortunate enough to start at Springvale as a general hand.
Four years later I was offered an Adult Traineeship in Horticulture, where I was awarded Student of the Year at Holmesglen TAFE.
The end of my traineeship coincided with a change in structure and I was promoted to Horticulture Team Leader. After a few years, an opportunity came up to become the Horticulture Operations Coordinator.
Over the years I have been able to continue my professional development by studying Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, Diploma in Horticulture and Business Management and an Advanced Diploma in Project Management in 2012. Skills learnt have assisted me in the many roles that I have been employed in.
In mid 2012 I moved into the role of Horticultural Operations Manager. Looking back to when I started, I never dreamt my journey would lead me to my current role.
SMCT is a great place to work and I always tell my team, “What you put in, is what you get out.”
I was fortunate enough to win a Bill Harry Employee Award and I have always felt there has been a career path for me here.
My managers have always put time in to mentor and help me when asked. If you show that you’re keen and want to better yourself and your skills, then I believe you will always have SMCT’s support."
Bill Harry Employee Awards – Kim, End of Tenure, Springvale Botanical Cemetery
"I come in everyday and try and do the best I can. I also enjoy my lunch breaks with my lovely walking group who laugh together, walking through the sunshine at Springvale.
Winning a Bill Harry Award* came as a total surprise. I cannot describe how it felt.
The night of the Awards Dinner is a night I will never forget and I am so grateful to everyone who was involved in it.
SMCT is a great place to work. I love the people, they are all so different and the management team are caring, approachable and supportive.
The highlight of my day is always the interactions with our client families."

Employee Training and Achievements – Christopher, Horticulture Apprentice - Parks and Gardens, Springvale Botanical Cemetery
“I’ve been with SMCT for 4 years now and it has gone very fast.
I now have a Certificate II and Certificate III in Horticulture and was awarded Outstanding 3rd Year Apprentice.
I love working outdoors at Springvale and seeing the change of the seasons and the changes around the grounds as they expand. I also love looking back at past work and feeling a sense of pride.
I’ve come to know people from all different walks of life and enjoy leading a small team to ensure that the annual displays look great.
I enjoy being able to visit other sites and to participate and watch them change and progress.
I’ve learned so much and the hours are great.”
