Many voices, singing as one
The spirit of our first Christmas Carols on the Lawn echoed Brian Eno who said, “When you sing with a group of people, you learn how to subsume yourself into a group consciousness, because acapella singing is all about the immersion of the self into the community. That's one of the great feelings - to stop being me for a little while and to become us. That way lies empathy, the great social virtue.”
The tradition of singing Carols together certainly does this as it gives families and friends an opportunity to share in the joy of music in this period of giving and togetherness. For many guests missing loved ones, this was a chance to remember and reflect, amongst the supportive Centre for Care & Wellbeing community.
Our guest performer, Michael Cormick, reflected on his own challenges and the great comfort to be found in Christmas music, reminding us of music’s ability to lift our spirits. Michael and his friend and accompanist, David Cameron, effortlessly drew the crowd in and got everyone singing, clapping and even dancing. They were supported in creating a magical soundscape by seven choristers from a range of ensembles including the Australian Chamber Choir, Newman College Choir and Ensemble Gombert.
The atmosphere at the end of the concert was a testament to music’s power and solidarity. The diverse set of Carols and songs ranged from the traditional, to calypso and upbeat unaccompanied numbers, leaving everyone with a feeling of lightness. This will be remembered by attendees as a joyous celebration of life, and sincere honouring of those in our hearts.
